Issue 12473
Live Link & Transfer Broken for Clothed Characters since Latest iClone Update
(The Bug)

(Evidence of Regression)

(Technical Log Findings)

(System Info)

Unreal Engine

(Impact)

I have been using the Unreal Live Link for over 2 years, but the latest update has completely broken my production workflow.

The Bug:

Clothed Characters: Transfer completes successfully, but Live Link fails to connect. The character remains static in Unreal.

Naked Characters: If I remove all clothing, the same character transfers and links perfectly.

Evidence of Regression: This was working flawlessly until 2 days ago. I am using the exact same character, same background, and same Unreal project file. The only variable that changed is the software version update.

Technical Log Findings: Unreal Engine’s Message Log shows that IK bones (ik_foot_root, ik_hand_gun, etc.) are missing from the bind pose only when clothing is applied. This prevents the Live Link from recognizing the subject.

Impact: There is no workaround for this issue, and my entire production is currently at a standstill. As a long-term professional user, I request an immediate investigation and fix for this regression.

unreal version is 5.6

To start with the conclusion, files saved in version 8.7 do not open in version 8.65 for me. At least, they didn’t open in my case.

Also, I do not know how to apply character animations created in 8.7 to an 8.65 character. I’m not saying there is no way; I just don't know it. There might be methods like saving them as custom animations or exporting as FBX to apply them to 8.65 characters. However, these methods do not transfer the keyframe information or AccuLips data worked on in iClone. In the past, I tried several times to move animation data between the same characters within the same version, but it didn't work well.

1. Anyway, I recognized the error and thought about several options I could take:

2. Moving the work from version 8.7 to 8.65, as you suggested.

3. Waiting for the 8.7 error to be resolved.

Just redoing the work in 8.65.

Regarding Option 1, based on my experience, iClone makes this difficult, so even if it works, other errors might occur during the process. It would likely take at least 2–3 days just to research how to do it. For Option 2, I have no idea when it will be fixed. It could take at least 2–3 weeks or more. For Option 3, since the work has already been done once, I can finish 3–4 days' worth of work in about 1–2 days.

When you upgraded from 8.65 to 8.7, iClone probably asked if you wanted to save the files as 8.65 files. If you agreed, there should be files with _IC8.63_BK at the end of the name. Also, if a file crashed while you were working in 8.65, there might be a restore file in the 8.65 version. Please look for these first.

In any case, I am in a position where I must start the work as quickly as possible. Since Options 1 and 2 have too much uncertainty, I did not try them. So, I just went with Option 3.

If you happen to succeed with Option 1, please share the method with me.

Thank you so much for the detailed walkthrough and for taking the time to validate that this is indeed a version-related bug. It is incredibly reassuring to have such a supportive community

here to help navigate these sudden regressions when production stops.

I am ready to follow your rollback steps, but I have one critical question regarding the work I’ve done over the last 48 hours:

I have put in about three days of heavy animation work since the update, which is currently saved as a standard iClone Project file (.iproject) in version 8.7.

f I downgrade to v8.65, will I be able to open this v8.7 .iproject file?

I am very concerned that the older version might reject the newer save file. If it is incompatible, is there a specific workflow to migrate the timeline/project data back, or will that data be lost?

This is a major challenge for me as I cannot afford to redo the animation work.

Thanks again for your help!

I’ve done extensive debugging on my own and was already fairly certain this was a version-related issue, and reading your message has completely confirmed it for me. Currently, I am back to production after downgrading both iClone and the Unreal Live Link plugin. After the downgrade, everything works perfectly, which proves there are absolutely no issues with my clothing assets.

Here is how you can downgrade: Go to: C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Reallusion\RLDownloads

In that folder, look for a file named something like IC865_Enu.exe (it should be around 2.7GB).

1. Completely uninstall your current iClone and the Unreal Live Link plugin.

2. Run that executable to reinstall iClone, which will bring you back to version 8.65.

3. Once iClone 8.65 is installed, go to the Reallusion Hub to install the Unreal Live Link plugin. It should prompt you to install version 1.37.

Note: If it shows version 1.38, click "Install." If a "Repair" option appears, select that. For some reason, it took me 3 or 4 clicks, but it eventually installed version 1.37 successfully.

This will fully restore your setup to the previous stable versions, and it should function normally. Just a heads-up: you might lose some of your previous settings, such as custom hotkeys and data saved as .iproject files within Custom Contents. However, individual assets like clothing and hair styles should remain intact.
Moving forward, I’ve decided that I should first install any new updates on a secondary computer to test for bugs. Only after confirming that everything is stable will I proceed with the update on my main workstation.

Please let me know if you’re still having trouble. I know exactly how stressful this is, and I’m happy to help however I can.

Hi there — jumping onto your thread because I’m seeing the exact same issue after the latest Reallusion iClone update to 8.7, and it’s seriously disrupting production.

Just checking if this issue has been resolved on your side?

If yes, what fixed it (patch/hotfix, plugin update, reinstall steps, specific settings)?

If not, have you found any workaround at all (even a temporary one) that allows clothed characters to Live Link reliably?

For me it’s identical to what you described:

Clothed character: Transfer says “successful” but Unreal Live Link doesn’t actually drive the character in Unreal Engine (stays frozen/static).

Same character naked: works immediately.

Same project, same assets — only change was the update. I’m also on Unreal 5.6.

I’ve already opened a support ticket because this is causing a lot of grief and wasted time. Honestly, it’s getting hard to trust these rollouts: it feels like more features are being pushed out while basic stability regresses, and that’s a major pain point that completely knocks you out of flow. Updates like this shouldn’t ship if they break core pipeline functionality — this needs proper, complete beta testing and a more planned release process.
