Mixing Spring Types (New for 5.4)

By using the Spring Editor, you are able to mix-apply the bone elements in a spring chain with different spring types, Translate or Rotate, for creating specific spring effects.

This mixing method is allows you to create flex objects such as skirts or tentacles, which bounce more weakly the closer they are to the main root of the spring string and more for nodes further away from the root.

  1. Load a model with a bone-skinned structure.
  2. Click the Edit Spring button in the Spring section.

The Modify panel will switch to Spring Editing mode.
  3. Select the bones that are at the higher level of the hierarchy.
  4. Click the Active Spring button and set them as Rotate type. Setting the upper bones as Rotate type can cause them to whirl when the character turns.
  5. Select the bones that are away from the root of the same bone string.
  6. Click the Active Spring button and set them as Translate type.
  7. Set the Soft / Hard value according to the level of the bones; the farther the lower (softer). Setting the lower bones as a Translate type can cause them to be more elastic when affected by motion.
  8. Repeat the same steps for the other bone strings to which you intend to apply the spring effect.
  9. Because the Translate nodes can depart more when the entire object moves, the draping and waving effects turn out to be stronger.
  10. Export the object to iClone and transform it to view the result.
