That's totally true and I'd expect a new character system for correct mocap.
Gets my vote. That being said, I do realize that it may be a whole new ball game, because it means a completely different angle. You will likely need a different set of sprites (arms, feet, etc) for a different angle as well as a different set of motions. You could probably fake it by positioning your character's arms above their head and zooming in so only arms/hands are visible in the frame so it looks like it's POV angle; it might do the trick for some scenarios but it won't be perfect.
