Actor, Software Developer and Play writer uses 2D Animation Software

Juan Gomez

I am a software developer, an actor and a scriptwriter from Uruguay.

I started developing cartoons in order to promote my work as a writer, and strangely enough some of them have even been turned into successful theatre plays. Currently, I am still doing some stuff as an actor.

Software Developer, Actor & Scriptwriter

Q: You are a playwriter, and now also an animator. Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background and your work.

My name is Juan Gomez and I was born on March 9th, 1982 in San Carlos, a small town in the interior of Uruguay. At the age of 21 I went to Montevideo, the capital of my country, to fulfill one of my dreams, being a programmer. I studied at ORT University and I graduated as a BS in Systems.

Over time, I discovered myself and decided to study Theatre. At the end of my second year, in 2011, with some partners we decided to create our independent Theatre company, that is how "La Logia Teatro" arises. At this moment we just wanted to do something, to be an option in the billboard of the city. But we did not have a play, and we could not find anything that suited 5 women and 3 men, so it had to be a "custom development". I volunteered to write and see if I could create something for all. The result was "The End of Your World", my first play and the "La Logia Teatro".

But all this happened while I was being formed as an actor while I realized the world of writing was more exciting, but feeling like an actor was a better way to explore my emotions.

It is hard to see where my profession fits in all this, but it becomes easier when you understand the importance of the structures. You can't start to write something if you do not have a clear goal and a structure to support it. Scripts and plays are not immune to that. You can let your imagination fly to infinity, but our left side of the brain must put things in order so that everything has coherence. Put things in an understandable and achievable level. Dreaming is fully permitted. But after this process we will have to decide what remains and what not, and that decision is only yours. As in life, with the difference that our chances as writers, are all endless and possible.

Logic and rationality are crucial to creating.

Q: In the past you have written several plays. Please elaborate more on this. Tell us what plays you have written, and how long does it take you to write a play?

I don't have a specific time to write something. The first play (The End of Your World) was written in 3 days, the second (PGM) in 2 days. But the third (The PLUNA affair) took me over 4 months because I had to do make an investigation. The single action of writing can be very short, but the maturation of an idea can last longer than that, to give an example, I have ideas in my head that are more than a year old. I think this is what generates my creative impulses, I take these stories out of my head as soon as possible to move to the next. In my career as a writer, I wrote 8 plays. 4 of them were performed in theaters and animated, the other 4 were only animated and the last one was just taken to the theater.

This is the list of some written works with CrazyTalk and a summary of them.

Q: You eventually started using CrazyTalk Animator as one of the tools for your play writing. When and how did you discover CrazyTalk? And why did you chose to use it?

When I started writing I found a problem, I was writing more than I could produce.

We have been working with La Logia Teatro since 2012, and we put 3 of my plays on the stage, but until that time I had written 7. I was needing something that would help me show my work in order to get new opportunities as a scriptwriter. With my knowledge of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Fireworks and other tools, I decided to look for a software that could help me make animations and show animated scripts. CrazyTalk appeared as a blessed, intuitive, easy to use tool, with incredible productivity that allowed me to have all the scenes of each play in 10 days.

Most of the time the production of this nature is spent coordinating with actors, trimming audio and editing video. The most complicated part is superbly resolved by CrazyTalk. In a month, you can have a complete and uploaded work in HD, in some cases it took me more to write the play, than to produce it.

Q: You have a series of animations titled "El Caso Pluna". What is this about? And what is the purpose of these animations?

"The PLUNA Affair" was an event that shocked Uruguay, a subject that everybody is still talking about till today. U$$300 Millions in losses, a big amount for an economy like ours. Trying to be objective on an issue steeped in politics that may offend the sensibilities of many people, I tried through comedy to bring people an understanding of the case so that they could arrived to their own conclusions. A play for theatres became the first animated documentary film in my country, and in comedy format!

And it is also an innovative component, like the animation, it tries to trigger the discussion to another level, with the facts divided into parallel. You can watch a documentary and a comedy at the same time.

All this under the same premise, make my work as a scriptwriter visible. The news was published in some digital media, the play was seen by 200 people in two months while the film was seen by more than 1,000.

Q: What are some of the other video animations that you have made?

These months have been very stressful in terms of artistic activities, with 7 animations and a new play, I have no time to do anything else for the rest of the year. However, many opportunities are emerging and the work begins to pay off. For next year there are some proposals and I've had meetings with people and companies interested in me. But there's something I'm not going to stop doing, I will keep writing, I couldn't stop.
